ELEMENTS: WORKED EXAMPLE

PROBLEM:

The problem is to find the power absorbed by the resistor. Power is the energy consumed per second. It can also be computed as the ratio of energy consumed per cycle to the period of a cycle. In this example, power consumed from the energy consumed per cycle and the cycle period of two seconds.

SOLUTION:

Solution is Obtained as follows. First get an expression for the current. It is expressed by equation one.

Next an expression for the source voltage is to be obtained. It is seen that the source voltage varies linearly. From zero second till half a second, it increases linearly. Hence we get equation two.

An expression for the source voltage is to be obtained for the period from 0.5 seconds to 1.5 seconds. It is seen that the source voltage varies linearly. It decreases linearly. Hence we get equation three.

By using the same technique, an expression for the source voltage is to be obtained for the period from 1.5 seconds to 2 seconds. It is seen that the source voltage varies linearly. It increases linearly. Hence we get equation four.

Hence current through the resistor can be expressed as follows:

Then power loss in the resistor is computed as follows:
